Artist Overview and Background
Hello! I’m Yaminee – but most people call me Yam! I am an emerging mixed media artist who is passionate about cultural connection and community building! I began showing work in Feb 2023 and have dived into developing my own practice. My favorite medium has become natural materials including rice, lentils, chickpeas, mung beans, and other dried good what remind me of my family. I use these materials to explore texture, history, and natural forms in order to connect with my cultural background. Outside of my personal work, I strive to build bridges and show up for communities in the Seattle area. I volunteer at a local art gallery and look for ways to promote and provide opportunities to local artists.
Key Highlights of My Artistic Journey
- Working to help build The Fishbowl Gallery in Uptown! It was an incredible experience and I was honored to lead the marketing team for 6 months. I also made my very first rice piece for a show there.
- Working with Y-WE and Refuge Outdoors on a program called Public Lands UnEarthed where youth story tellers interviewed people about their experiences outdoors as people of color. I was tasked to make 3D works of their stories and it was a great experience! I left feeling so inspired and with a changed appreciation of my relationship to nature.
- Creating pieces for ACRS Walk for Rice to raise money for food banks in the International District! They welcomed me with open arms and I was so excited to help a local cause so in line with my work!
